The Martyrs (2024-2025)

Two Martyrs in all their majesty on the exhibition WARÚM DARÚM WARÚM DARÚM a conversation piece. september 2005, Loods6 Amsterdam
More about this exhibition, which I curated and designed together with Sanne Danz under the heading NEWS

Around 1600, the Spanish/Greek painter El Greco did a series of portraits of the twelve apostles. I have always been particularly impressed by the cloaks, their impressive billowing presence, as if all the eloquence was in them.
I started a series inspired by these cloaks. It will also be Twelve. I call them Martyrs, instead of Apostles, to pull them out of the Christian sphere. They represent all those who have been sacrificed for what they stood for, independent of religion, time period or school of thought.
The installations are made of everyday materials such as carpet, vinyl, elastic, garbage bags, clamps and wires. Their meaning is taken out of context, and turned inside out, neutralizing the materials and making them as pristine, as marble or paint. Only to be miraculously brought back to new life in the  artwork.
